• Year 7

    During Year 7 pupils will study a unit on Enterprise and Work Related Learning.

     

    During the course of this topic, pupils will learn about the world of work and develop their confidence in front of others by being able to highlight their strengths and weaknesses and share these with their peers.

     

    Pupils will also learn about different types of jobs and salaries and the value and importance of all jobs in society. They will begin to research jobs that they are interested in and take a psychometric test to see what jobs they might be suitable for.

     

    They will have the opportunity to sign up to and use Start, our career guidance software, which they will also be able to access at home and after they have left school.

     

    Pupils will also take part in an interactive workshop (UniversityGO) run by Sheffield Hallam University.

  • Year 8

    During Year 8 pupils will study a unit of work on Economic Well Being and Financial Capability.

     

    They will find out their money personality and learn how to select and open a bank account. Pupils will receive lessons from a guest speaker from the Money Charity and will learn how money and the economy fits into the wider topic of careers.

     

    Pupils will also study a unit of work on Democracy and learn of the impact that the Government has on the world of work.

     

    All pupils will take part in the annual 'What's My Line' event where they interview business figures from across Sheffield to work out their occupations.

     

    Pupils will also take part in an interactive workshop (SHUTube) run by Sheffield Hallam University.

  • Year 9

    During Year 9 pupils will undertake a personalised unit of work specifically on careers. They will have the opportunity to sign up to and use Start, our career guidance software, which they will also be able to access at home and after they have left school.

     

    Pupils will undertake an individual skills and qualities audit and learn more about the benefits and drawbacks of progressing onto University or moving straight into further training and work. To support these lessons pupils will receive a visit from the Higher Education Progression Partnership (HEPP) who represent both local Universities. In order to inspire first generation university applications we have links with the DiscoverUS outreach programme at the University of Sheffield and the interactive workshop (Survive the Zombie Apocalypse) run by Sheffield Hallam University.  This encourages pupils who may not have considered university to find out more.

     

    With Year 9 being a significant year in terms of options and choices, pupils will undertake a lesson on the Year 9 Options Process and begin looking into the subjects that they may wish to study further, in order to make informed decisions. Finally pupils will be given the chance to interview each other and the teachers in preparation for the Dress to Impress Day in Year 10.

     

  • Year 10

    During Year 10 pupils will take part in a Dress to Impress Day. All pupils , if they wish to, will be given the opportunity to have a mock interview with potential employers from the world of Sheffield business and begin to start producing a CV.

     

    Pupils will revisit their skills and qualities audit from Year 9 and learn more about the Careers Education Information & Guidance Service provided at Forge Valley School, as well as the different pathways that students can take after Year 11.

     

    Pupils will receive a talk from someone at UCAS Progress to introduce this process and preparation for Year 11 and also learn more about life at Forge Valley Sixth Form. In addition to this guest speakers from Industry and higher education establishments will be invited in to talk to pupils.

     

    Pupils will also take part in an interactive game show (SHUniversity Challenge) run by Sheffield Hallam University.

  • Year 11

    During Year 11 pupils will take part in a UCAS Progress and Careers Drop Down Day, which will start the process of applying for Post 16 education and work based training courses. Pupils will be provided with two hours of supervised learning time to begin writing their personal statements. After this point pupils will be given two weeks to produce their first draft and hand this into their form tutor. After this point pupils will be provided with time in form time to finish their statement.

     

    On the drop down day, pupils will receive a talk from the UCAS Progress organisation, before being provided with an hour of supervised time to begin filling out their details on the site. They will be then expected to finish this at home. All pupils have been allocated a form tutor who is fully trained in UCAS Progress.

     

    Further to this pupils receive information about the new GCSE levels and learn about life at Forge Valley Sixth Form. Sheffield Hallam University also visit to run their 'SHU Star' game show.

     

    Pupils have another drop down day during the first term on a separate topic. However, if required, time will be allocated for pupils to finish off their UCAS applications.
